Birds Singing (hallelujah was beneath their wings)

I wrote this song about 5 years ago and really like the autumn/winter kind of feeling it evokes. I don’t know if this is something that I only see in my own mind – you be the judge. The lyrics represent a more abstract style of my writing. Sometimes I like to write very direct and sometimes I like to write in a more open ended symbolic manner that allows the listener and myself to interpret their own meaning. This is a love song of sorts.  I will leave the story-line up to you.

Hope you enjoy,

Birds Singing (hallelujah was beneath their wings)Lyrics

If words are not supposed to hurt

And actions are all that’s real

Then why if I say I love you

Would it bring you a flood of tears

If strength is measured in miles

And kindness just a childish desire

Then why is the Ransom I owe

Held by a moon that’s on fire

Chorus:

I heard the birds singing – they were calling your name while you slept

I saw the birds fly overhead – hallelujah was beneath their wings

The years have made me hard

But wiser in my demise

And while the sun circles the heavens

My heals are dug in the earth

My hands are callused with doubt

My confidence shrouded in fear

Perfect is only a word

But your words they spilled to me like wine

Chorus:

I heard the birds singing – they were calling your name while you slept

I saw the birds fly overhead – hallelujah was beneath their wings

Rustic Barn Sessions – November 2016

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

I have been fortunate enough to find a home every Sunday with owner’s Jody and Jason Brenenstuhl of Rustic Barn Pub in Troy, NY. It’s a beautiful rustic atmosphere as you might have guessed from the establishment’s name – with a wonderful stage and intimate feel that really makes for a nice late Sunday afternoon/evening of music – 4-7 PM. I have been recording all my performances and hope to continue sharing some songs that I think came out especially well. To get the ball rolling here is my first batch of songs from November 2016.

Thanks for listening and downloads are free.

Seasonal (autumn) song: ‘Beauty in the Light’

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Although I can appreciate the change of seasons living in upstate/Troy, New York, there is something about late fall/autumn and the shortening daylight that makes me feel a bit melancholy/depressed, almost as if I am grieving the loss of a friend from warmer days. The woman I was dating at the time I wrote this, helped me see another side to it all, as she was a big fan of winter and that certain magic that comes with a first snow, the winter solstice, a New Year beginning, bringing new possibilities to ones mind. I recorded this in my very little office/studio – which surprisingly has some decent acoustics.

Hope you enjoy,

‘Beauty in the Light’ – Lyrics

Watching the snow come down – blowing my memories

I still remember that green grass

So pure and clean

But fall is coming on – winter on its way

I feel that chill  I can’t get warm

Time to put my love away

I’m shrugging that cold away – I believe I might be fine

But you know me better there’s things that words

Just can’t define

Then you said there’s beauty in the light

All the way – from the stars down to our eyes (from the stars to our eyes…)

So we’ll walk hand in hand – through the cold and damp

Spring is coming it always does

Maybe we can make it there

But you said why worry – about something that’s so far off

When there’s beauty in the air

And magic in our hearts

Then you said there’s beauty in the light

All the way – from the stars down to our eyes (from the stars to our eyes…)

Memorial Holiday | Remember & IMAGINE

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

I think life is all a song and dance. We try to find answers and end up going further down the rabbit hole. Suffering is everywhere. War is everywhere and yet people perform acts of kindness everyday. It’s a strange place we live in isn’t it? Our lives are all driven by contrast. There would be no love without hate and no day without night. No person can stay happy day in and day out as that experience would grow old. We need pain to grow, doldrums to see with sober clarity and loss to appreciate fulfillment.

Poppies are a symbol of remembrance for fallen and missing soldiers – Read the story

Life is unfair if we look at it through a lens of perfection. Death is the ultimate equalizer, the ultimate catalyst for how we derive meaning in our lives. I can’t imagine fighting in a war… my dad fought in World War II -he would be 97 years old today. War is a necessary evil. Differences will always exist as humans/life are not perfect. Cultures will always clash with a strong desire to carry on their beliefs. The desire to live is a strong one and yet so many soldiers/warriors since the beginning of man have given the prime of their lives to a higher cause, for preservation of a greater whole. War indeed shows the ugliness of life and peace shows what man/woman is capable of achieving when the goal is not just survival of a religion or a country but the survival of man and woman.

I tip my hat to those warriors that fought with pure intent and I also hope someday there will be peace. To me this is the ultimate paradox of being human. The acceptance of war and the striving for peace.

So what better song to share with you other than John Lennon’s IMAGINE? He basically states in a few verses/words  what I have written here in a much longer and less poetic fashion 🙂

Here is a live version of me playing IMAGINE a few years back at the Hilton Gardens in Troy, New York.

Hope you enjoy and have a safe – thoughtful Memorial Weekend.
